Long time friends and musical collaborators Arshak Alozian and Curt Barlage have always found themselves in the bowels of creativity, experimentation and inner + societal struggle. These components have stewed over time amongst the duo. After sharing the stage together for over 15 years in a mish mosh of different musical projects, break-ups and shake-ups, blood and whiskey spilled…it was then on a random eve recording session in the summer of 2015 when they decided that it was the time to revisit their roots, lay heavy on the reverb and delay pedals that would become the sonic formula for Red Hearts White Ribbons.
“It seemed like a good time to do it” recalls Curt. “Everyones getting back into these shoegaze bands and you really can’t avoid hearing all these great tunes pumping on the bar speakers nowadays”. “Yeah and we really wanna keep a classic element to it…keep it true to it’s original form” interjects Arshak. EP 1, the debut 4 song release by RHWR was recorded in an extreme DIY fashion. Guitars were plugged straight into cassette 4-track recorders, drums captured using very minimal microphone set-ups and fingered keyboard drum pad overdubs to ‘beef it up’. It this sense it retains a very raw and sonically distorted projection yet spacious with smooth edges created by the array of vintage analog effects.
Red Hearts White Ribbons EP 1 is available on digital formats. Vinyl and cassette to be released in 2018 through Respectful Lust Records.
